Back when I was but a slightly shorter, over-educated, sleep-deprived undergrad tater-tot, I wore clothes that definitely didn't go over well in the midwest. I tended to combine menswear pieces with things that really didn't make sense, and the less it went together, the more I liked it. My sense of, er, "style", was not appreciated out in Honkey-Dorey-Cornville.
Of course, the older I get, the fewer fucks I have to give, and it seems I may not have even hit the bottom of my fucklessness. There are in fact even fewer fucks, or so I hear from my friends who are over 40. I can't wait until I stop caring enough to be super over the top and flamboyant.
