I'm starting it a little early for a couple of reasons:
1). My bank account and I are not on speaking terms right now. My brother totaled my car and a new one had to be purchased IMMEDIATELY as there is no spare vehicle. I refuse to pay interest on a depreciating asset out of principle, so I paid cash, to the tune of $9000. That hurt. Ouch. Sorry, bank account. Also, that happened RIGHT AFTER my most recent vacation (technically, he totaled the van DURING my vacation, and I almost got on the next flight home to go kick his fucking ass). So it was two very large expenses, vacation and car, back to back, and I need to make amends with my bank account and restock my savings. This is a great time to pull back my recreational spending.
2). Then I bought a second car. Much cheaper than the first, but also in cash for the same reason. But now there is no "Holy crap we're all screwed" because of lack of transportation (this wouldn't be a big deal but our bus services are unreliable and limited, and I also have 4 kids). It also means my brother (who lives with me while I help support him through college) no longer has to drive MY car. He can go total the cheaper car instead.
Not going to lie, it's been like... a day... and I'm kind of twitchy. This isn't just about buying clothes and such. It's wine, going out to eat, entertainment... It's like fasting from all the things I enjoy. But I don't want to just build a regular habit of hemorrhaging money, and the fact that this is hard for me is just more proof that I need to do this.
