BUT, it doesn't have to be that way.
Here are my tips to throw together an outfit, and a GOOD outfit, in just a matter of minutes!
1). Pick ONE item with a pattern. For me, it's the coat. In colder weather, your outerwear is going to the most visible item of clothing you are wearing, so this is a good place to start. If you don't have a patterned coat, or it's way too warm for that, patterned skirt or pants are a good substitute. Basically, throwing a pattern in there keeps your outfit visually interesting more so than just solids. But when in a rush, just pick one pattern. Pattern-mixing tends to require more thought and ain't nobody got time for that.
2). Stick to a quick, easy, tried and true color scheme you already know and love. This is NOT the time to see if that bag goes with those shoes, etc. I know that I love jewel tones like purple and blue paired together, so I made those my two colors, and then paired it with my neutrals (black and white).
Other color combos to consider: Dark charcoal grey paired with dusty seafoam green and a faded burgundy (good pattern choice could be damask or floral, like in the pants), Maroon paired with teal and cognac brown leather accessories (and incorporating a textured knit or fringe would work well, even if it's just some chunky knitted boot socks peeking out over the top, or some fringe on your sandals, depending on weather), and Ivory with coral and gold (with an unexpected pattern choice like pineapples or basically anything Kate Spade-ish).
Basically, don't overthink it. This is a good time to "recycle" an outfit you already know looks great on you. If you know that green moto pants and that bomber jacket look awesome together, then by all means, grab that.
3). Skip the makeup and go with distracting accessories instead. I mean, if you're SERIOUSLY crunched on time, something has to give, and I promise you that your normal, natural, god-given face is not too offensive to be seen in public. Really. And I'm sorry I have to convince anyone of that!
But, if you're worried people who are used to seeing you with makeup on, or you didn't get much sleep... distract or hide with accessories! If it's sunny out, SUNGLASSES! Those are awesome for hiding tired eyes, or if you don't necessarily want to look totally undone. If you're going to be indoors mostly, or it's not sunny, throw on a pair of reading glasses (you can non-RX glasses too). I know that sounds awful and a bit hipster-ish, but if you put on a fun or bright pair of frames, that is where the attention will be drawn. Not on whether or not you have make-up. (And if you already wear glasses, then you're set!)
Other pieces to distract from your lack of makeup: jewelry. Statement earrings or a statement necklaces (pick one, not both), will be the highlight of your features instead.
(Also, if you skip the tennies, you don't have to spend any time looking for socks! Pick heels, ballet flats, sandals, etc. for the fastest option.)
Pick one pattern, pick a 1-2 colors you KNOW look good with your neutrals in styles you know already look good on you, skip the makeup, throw on a statement accessory and/or glasses (or sunglasses), and pretty shoes, maybe tousle your hair or imprison it in a bun or braid. Grab your purse, and DONE.
Literally that should only take you 5 minutes.
If you are spending too much time hunting down a specific piece of clothing, just grab something different. In fact, limit your choices to only what you can literally see in front of you, so you don't waste time digging around or seeing if that one thing is in the dryer, etc.
Before I go, here's a quick list of what I'm wearing in the photos:
- Outerwear: Coat I bought at a random shop in Amsterdam
- Pants: Burgundy ankle-cut slacks from the Gap
- Top: Button down shirt from Prada
- Shoes: Christian Louboutin
- Purse: Kate Spade
- Sunglasses: Prada
- Jewelry: Necklace by House of Harlow
Wow, that list makes me sound really bougie and snobby! Those of you who have been readers of my blog for a while know that I also shop at Forever 21 and the children's section of Target, so it's not like my entire wardrobe is full of ridiculously-priced designer items. This outfit just happened to contain a lot of it. But outfits like this area also the reason why I'm on a shopping ban! #NoBuy365
